SBANISENKOSI

It's that day today, my first doctor's appointment. I'm nervous because now I'm going there pregnant, now I have to look at ultrasounds and stuff like that. This life thing is so confusing and it can change when you least expect it. I'm in Nkanyezi's room getting ready.. he's gonna come over and pick me up. My mother has been talking about meeting Nkanyezi's mother so I don't know how they're gonna go about that.

“Knock knock..” Nkanyezi's mother says walking inside with a cup of coffee in her hand. I haven't been feeling well this morning. I've been nauseas and I feel so bloated so it hasn't been a great morning for me.

“Are you still feeling nauseas?” She asks, I nod brushing my hair.

“Very..” I say

“Nkanyezi should buy you some plain yogurt and crackers on the way. They might help..” She says, I nod.

“I don't think tbe coffee will go in right now.” I say.

“It's okay nana, I understand. You look beautiful by the way..” Shs says, do I really? i feel like my entire body is sweating.

“Thank you ma..” I say, she smiles and walks out. I put on my sandals and walk out. I didn't know being pregnant can be this tiring. I'm sure I'm not even 2 months yet but i feel like the world might just swallow me up. I'm still not ready for whatever this journey brings, what do you mean I'm gonna be a mother?

“I think that's him.. this silly boy! he's not even driving in.” She says, I walk to the kitchen and grab a bottle of water. Maybe it'll help ease down the nauseas feeling. I walk to the lounge and he enters as I sit down.

“Sanibonani..” He says walking inside, I don't feel good..

“Why aren't you driving in? now you want Sbanisenkosi to walk to the gate?” His mother asks, he glares at me then back at her.

“The appointment is at 10am Ma and it's already to 10.. we're gonna be late.” He says.

“Hmm, she woke up not feeling well this morning. She's nauseas and has a light headache. Do stop at the garage or anywhere and get her some plain yogurt and crackers.. they'll help.” She says, he nods.

“I'll do just that, we can go.” He says, I stand up and grab my phone. I don't want to hold anything.

“He must turn on the AC in the car, it's hot outside and probably worse in the car.” She says, Christopher sighs.

“I know that Mom, now can you let us go?” He asks, she chuckles and glares at me.

“Do come with the scans, I know the baby is barely a human but I want to see my little grandchild.” She says, I nod.

Christopher and I walk out of the house all the way to the gate. Oh my poor feet but let me not complain. He opens the door for me and I jump in, he closes the door and walks to the other side. He jumps in and closes the door as well.

“You won't throw up when I drive? or should I drive slowly?” He asks.

“Drive however you want..I'll be fine..” I say softly, he starts the engine brining it to life and he drives off. He drives in silence, I keep swallowing my own saliva.. I didn't eat anything this morning but it's like I filled my stomach up. He stops by the garage and grabs his card.

“Aside from the crackers and plain yogurt. Do you need anything else?” He asks, I think for a while.

“Gummy bears, the big packet.” I say, he nods and walks off. I heave a sigh sitting back. This pregnancy comes with a lot of morning sicknesses, I see it. I was reading this other book about pregnancy and man..I'm freaking out, I still have a long way to go.

After some time, Christopher comes back with what I asked for and an energy drink for himself.

“There you go..” He says handing me plastic, I take out the yogurt and look for the spoon but there's no spoon. I frown and glare at him, he glares at me.

“What is it?” He asks.

“Am I supposed to eat this yogurt with my hands?” I ask him, he raises his eyebrow.

“There's another way of approaching that sentence..” He says.

“I need a spoon to eat, you go and get it for me.” I say closing the lid of the yogurt and sitting back.

“Are you serious?” He asks, I keep quiet till he eventually jumps off the car. I grab the gummy bears and take a few. He comes back with the spoon and jumps in the car. He hands me the spoon and drives off.

We reach the hospital a bit late for our appointment but whatever, he parks the car in the parking lot and turns the engine off.

“Let's go..” He says, I jump off the car and fix my dress. I hold onto my phone and we walk inside.

“Hi, we're here to see Dr Mthembu..” Christopher says to the receptionist. She glares at him and bites her lower lip. Because I'm trying to be a better person, I'll let her be. This is not my boyfriend anymore..

“Office 44th..” She says still biting her lower lip.

“You can't even see my woman next to me? haike sisi.” He says pulling me as we walk off. I yank my hand off his..

“Don't touch me..” I say, he heaves a sigh. We walk to Dr Mthembu's office and he knocks before we enter.

“Oh come in! come in!” She says placing the documents she was holding down. Christopher closes the door and we sit.

“Sbanisenkosi Mbatha and Christopher Biyela right?” She says, we nod.

“ahha, new parents.. this is gonna be so fun. So before we begin, I'm gonna take your weight so please step on this scale for me. ” She says, I stand up and take off my sandals before walking to the scale. I step on it and the weight I'm seeing here is not the weight I had 2 months back.

“Thank you, I'm just gonna take your blood pressure now.” She says, I watch her as she takes my blood pressure with the machine she's holding.

“Good, now you're just gonna lay on the examination bed for me so we can get started. I'm sure you're excited to know how your baby is doing then we'll take a urine sample just to ensure that you don't have any infections or snything.” She says, I nod and walk over to the bed. I pull my dress down a bit exploding my belly.

I lay down and she sets up everything, I take a deep breath and say a little prayer in my heart.

“This is the clear gel that's going to help identify your baby, it's cold so you should hang in there.” She says applying it on the ultrasound device.

“Here we go..” She says applying it on my belly, I scream a bit. Why is it so cold, goshh..

“I know it's cold, ncese..” She says, I open my eyes and find Christopher standing next to me. He's not glaring at me but at the screen.

“Okay, you're 7 weeks, 6 days pregnant so tomorrow you're gonna be 2 months pregnant.” She says. As I said, it feels unreal. What do I even know as a 25 year old?

“There is your baby, not quite visible yet but you can see the tiny bean shaped figure over there..that's your baby, he/she is growing just fine.” She says, I glare at the screen. What I usually watch in the movies is now happening to me. I feel my hand being squeezed and my eyes shift to Christopher..

“Your pregnancy is confirmed, you're both going to be mommy and daddy.” She says as we continue to glare at the ultrasound. I'm overwhelmed with this pregnancy and I don't know how to feel.

“So does the baby grow everyday? he/she won't remain like this right?” He asks, a very obvious question.

“Yes the baby grows everyday, next time I see you both. The size would probably be of an olive” She says.

“Can we get the images? I'd like to have them.” He asks her, she nods.

“Absolutely.. I'll do just that.” She says getting the device off me, Christopher grabs the wipes next to the bed and wipes my belly. I sit up and pull my dress back up.

“Here are the images..” She says handing them over to Christopher. He smiles a bit and thanks her.

“Thank you so much..” He says, he glares at me and sighs. We sit on the chairs again as she writes a few things.

“Your stress levels are up..” She says, I think I know why.

“There's some medication I'd like to prescribe for you in order to reduce your stress. I'm also going to ask you to make an appointment after every 4 weeks to track the baby's growth and health until full term.” She says, I nod.

“There are certain meals you must have and because I'm noticing your stress levels going high, you're going to have to stick to a specific eating routine. Your body is still adapting to the pregnancy.” She says, I nod.

“So are the hormones also a thing or she's just being moody and rude towards me?” Christopher asks her and I frown, I don't know why this doctor is laughing because none of this is funny. God out of the people in this world, you choose a man I met in the bathroom to be my baby daddy? kanti unjani na bra God?
