Deadly obsession ,Chapter 20

ZIBUSISO

Every day, I go to work, and then I visit Noma and Zamo. After that, I spend time with my friends. After that, I head to the hospital to check on Suku. My mother also calls to check on Suku from time to time, but she still hasn't woken up. However, I have faith that she will soon, as it's a new week today.

After showering, I put on my doctor's uniform and smile to myself. I can't believe that I've achieved my dream of becoming a general practitioner. It's amazing to see myself in this uniform every day. After getting ready, I gather my things and head out the door. I will grab breakfast on the way to work.

I got in my car and drove to the hospital. I greeted the receptionist and then went to see my friends in their offices. After catching up with them, I went to my own office and started seeing patients. The first ones I saw were a group of people who had been in a car accident the night before. They looked very injured, but I did my best to treat them. I gave them sedatives to help them sleep and manage their pain.

I found myself wondering how the accident victims were doing today. I was about to find out, as I headed to the first patient's room. I greeted her as I entered

Me:. "Good morning, Mrs. Zuma," I say. "How are you feeling today?"

She looked up at me with tired eyes.

Mrs Zuma :"I'm in a lot of pain, Doctor," she says. "It's hard to move around."

I nodded sympathetically.

Me:"I know it must be very hard for you, Mrs. Zuma," I say, keeping my voice gentle and reassuring. "But I want you to know that we're going to do everything we can to help you feel better."

She looked at me, her eyes full of pain and fear.

MrsZuma":Thank you, Doctor,I just don't know how I'm going to get through this."

Me:"Well, let's take it one step at a time," I say "First, Let's take it one step at a time, let's take a look at your injuries and see what we need to do to help you heal. We'll also want to discuss physical therapy, to help you regain your strength and mobility."

Mrs Zuma "I'm afraid I won't be able to walk again," she said, her voice trembling. "I just don't see how I could ever get back to normal."

I nodded sympathetically.

Me:"It's going to be a long road to recovery, Mrs. Zuma," "It's going to be a long road to recovery, Mrs. Zuma," I continue. "But I have to tell you, I've seen many people come back from much worse injuries than yours. With a lot of hard work and dedication, you can get back on your feet. I know it won't be easy, but it's possible."

Mrs. Zuma looked at me, doubt and hope warring in her eyes.

Mrs.Zuma"But what if I can't do it?" she asked. "What if I just can't get back to where I was before?"

Me:"Mrs. Zuma, even if you don't get back to exactly where you were before, you can still make a full and happy life for yourself," I say. "You might not be able to do everything you could before, but that doesn't mean you can't still do wonderful things. There's so much out there for you, and I believe you can reach it."

She was silent for a moment, then asked,

Mrs Zuma: "Do you really think so?"

Me:"I know so," I say, meeting her gaze.

"There are so many things you can do, Mrs. Zuma," I say. "You could take up painting or writing. You could volunteer at a local shelter or hospital. You could start a book club or a garden. You could travel or learn a new language. There are so many possibilities, even if you can't do everything you could before."

Mrs Zuma:"I never thought of it like that," she said, her eyes lighting up. "I guess I just assumed that my life was over"

I went on to treat Mrs. Zuma's wounds and check her progress. Once I was done, I asked a nurse to bring her some food, so that she could take her medication. After that, I moved on to my next patient, a young boy who was accompanied by his mother.

Me:"Hello there, young man!" I say smiling at him. "What's your name?"

He look at me shyly, then whispered,

Him:"Billy."

I crouched down to his level and say ,

Me:"Well, Billy, it's nice to meet you.

"How are you feeling, Billy?" I ask, keeping my tone gentle and friendly.

Billy look at his mother, then back at me.

Him:"I'm okay," he says in a small voice. "But my arm still hurts."

I nodded, then look at his mother.

Me:"Does he have any allergies or medications I should know about?" I ask.

She shook her head.

Her:"No, he doesn't," she says. "He's never been sick like this before."

Me:"Well, let's see if we can make him feel better," I say picking up the boy and put him on the bed.

I carefully examine  Billy's arm, looking for any broken bones or other injuries. I soon found the problem: his radius bone was fractured. I bandaged his arm and gave him a sling to wear. Then I gave his mother instructions on how to care for his injury and when to bring him back for a check-up. After that, I saw a few more patients before it was time for lunch. I headed to the cafeteria, where I found my friends already seated.

Andile:"Hey there, Doc!" he says grinning at me. "How's it going?"

Me:"It's going pretty well," I say, sitting down at the table. "I've seen some interesting cases today. And I'm looking forward to having lunch with you guys!"

Me: ", how's everything going with you and Lubanzi?"

Andile:" Things are going really well! We've been enjoying spending time together and getting to know each other better. I'm really happy with how things are going."

Mongezi: "That's great to hear, Andile! It's always nice to hear about a couple who are getting along well. "

Andile:"I'm not sure if we are a couple yet we haven't labled what we are doing for now,but I like the kid "he says smiling ,I smile too I'm happy for this one I look at Mongezi

Me:"And you?is there someone serious in your life not those hoes you go around "I ask laughing

Mongezi:"well lets just say I'm still courting someone "he say we grinn at him wow its not like him this one courting someone.

Me:"Oh really?" I say, w an intrigued look on my face. "You've never really been the relationship type, Mongezi. What's so different about this person?"

Mongezi laughs.

Mongezi:"Well, I'll tell you guys one thing: she's really special," he says, a grin on his face. "I can't really put it into words. But let's just say I'm smitten."

My eyes widen.

Me:"Smitten, huh?" . "Now that's a word I wouldn't expect to hear you use! Do you think this might be the one, Mongezi?"

He shruggs.

Mongezi:"I'm not sure yet," he says. "It's still early days. But I'm definitely interested in seeing where things go."

Andile chimed in.

Andile:"Man, that's great," he says. "I'm happy for you. It's always nice to find someone who makes you feel that way. "

After we finished eating and chatting, we headed back to work. I had a few more patients to see before my shift ended. As I was making my rounds, I couldn't help but think about what Mongezi had said. It was nice to see him so happy and invested in someone. I wondered if he might actually be in love.

The thought made me smile. It was always great to see friends finding happiness. And quitting playing around.

******************************

The day kept on dragging and I was done for today I drive to the hospital to visit Suku.I head to her ward and I sit next to her,I hold her hand.I greet her even though she can't answer ,I tell her about my day and eveything how I miss her.

I laid my head on the bed next to her for a few minutes, savoring the feeling of being close to her. Then I felt something brush against my hair. I sat up and turned to look at her. Her eyes were open, and she was looking at me.

Me:"Suku!" I exclaim. "You're awake!" I feel a rush of emotions - relief, joy, and concern. I didn't know what to say or do, so I just sat there, staring at her.

She gave me a weak smile.

Suku's smile was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Even though she was weak and fragile, it lit up the room. I felt a surge of hope that she was going to be okay.

I cleared my throat. "How are you feeling?" I ask

Suku's smile faded a little.

Suku:"I'm okay," she says, but her voice was hoarse and quiet. "I'm just tired."

Me:"That's to be expected," I say. "Water?"I ask she nods I get up pour water in a glass and put a straw I help her drink she finish I put the glass away

"Are you feeling any pain anywhere ?"I ask she shakes her head

Suku:"No,I want to sit upstraight"she says I help her sit upstraight

Me:"Better?"I ask

Suku:"Yes Doc"she says smiling I smile too.

Me:"I can't believe you are awake Suku"I say

Suku:"Well you better believe it now, come get in the sheets with me"she make space for me.

Me:"Are you sure?" I ask. "I don't want to do anything that might make you uncomfortable."

Suku looks up at me with pleading eyes. Suku:"Please," she says. "I just want to feel close to someone. I need to know that I'm not alone."

I decided to take the plunge and join Suku in the bed. She smiles and say,

Suku: "Thank you."

I ask,

Me:"For what?"

Suku:"For not giving up on me," she says. "You always come to see me and tell me about your day, even when I couldn't respond. I could hear you, and it made me feel less alone."

Me:"So you heard everything, even when you couldn't respond?" I ask.

She nods, a slight smile still on her lips.

Suku :"Yes, even though I couldn't open my eyes or speak, I could hear you. It was like a lifeline, hearing your voice. It made me feel like someone was still there, even when I couldn't see or move."

Me:"That's amazing," I say, truly in awe of what she had just described. "I had no idea you could hear me"

Suku"I know it's hard to understand,It's hard for me to explain it, even. But it's like my mind was awake, even when my body wasn't."

Me:"Wow," I say, truly humbled by what she is describing. "You're so strong, Suku. I admire your resilience. Can I ask you, what was it like, being awake but not being able to respond?"

Suku :"It was frustrating," she said, her brow furrowing slightly. "I wanted to talk to you, to thank you for coming every day."

I smile and gently kiss her forehead.

Me: "You're awake now," I say. "Do you feel okay? Do you need anything?"

She shakes her head.

Suku :"Just this," she says, laying her head on my chest. "I can't explain how happy I am to be awake and to be with you."

I put my arms around her and held her close.

Me:"I'm so glad you're awake, too," I say. "And I'm here for you, always."

We sat like that for a long time, neither of us speaking. I could feel her breathing, steady and calm. I closed my eyes and just enjoyed the feeling of holding her close. It felt like we were suspended in time, like nothing else in the world mattered......
