I slammed the door shut and stormed into the kitchen, rage pounding in my ears like a war drum.

"My son, you're back?" The woman I knew to be my mother called out from behind the stove. She closed a pot and stepped toward me with open arms.

"What do you want here?" I snapped, stepping away from her embrace.
