CHAPTER 5

*INSERT 5*

PHILA.

I arrive at the rented house; jet lag is killing me, but I can't afford to waste any more time.

I take a quick shower, apply lotion, and put on jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers.

He knocks before throwing himself inside.

Ishmael: She just got home from university.

Me: So we ca…

I'm interrupted by my phone ringing. I look at the caller ID before answering.

Me: Lydia.

Lydia: You left, and you didn't bother telling me?

I sigh and signal to Ishmael that we can go.

He walks out after nodding, and I follow behind, going to where the car is parked.

Me: I didn't think it was necessary to tell you. Remember, you like leaving without telling me? I'm just simply following in your footsteps.

I say as I get in the driver's seat and Ishmael gets in the passenger seat.

Lydia: But babe, you should have at least told me.

Me: What difference would it have made? I was still going to leave either way, and now you know I'm not there.

She just wants me there so I can be her emotional support just because she got dumped.

Ishmael puts the address into the GPS.

Me: Well, you can go ahead and have it without me, honey. I'll see you when I get back.

Lyida: Phila!

She screams over the phone, and I drop it, putting it on the dashboard.

Me: Never, ever get married.

Ishmael: Don't say that; your wife is just the worst of all women.

I chuckle, driving off.

Me: She thinks I'm blind to see what she has been doing behind my back.

Ishmael: She should know nothing can pass you just like that; you'll always find out.

I chuckle.

Ishmael: I'd hate to think what you will do to her.

Me: Why do you think I'm going to do something to her? You just love giving me too much credit.

He laughs.

And I know he's just mocking me.

I drive in since the gate is open, and I park my car before we head to the door.

I knock, and an older woman opens the door.

Mamdudu: Hello, how can I help you?

Me: Hello ma. I'm here for the owner of the house.

She looks at me and Ishmael; you can see she doesn't trust us.

Me: Please.

Mamdudu: Okay, wait here.

She closes the door. A minute later, it opens, and it's her with my replica.

I almost tear up, but I can't afford to be weak.

I clear my throat.

Me: Hey.

She stares at me and I can't really say what she's thinking.

Boikanyo: I… you're late.

I sigh.

Me: I didn't know; I found out yesterday.

Boikanyo: Mhm, come in.

We follow behind her to the dining room, and we get seated.

Boikanyo: Can I make food first?

Ishmael: Yes, please.

He quickly answers making her laugh.

Mamdudu: Since you're the first to answer, come help me in the kitchen.

He frowns, making me chuckle.

But he goes anyway.

Me: So, what's her name?

Boikanyo: Tsholofelo.

She looks at her, thinking she's calling her name.

Boikanyo: Menke that's your father go greet him.

She turns to look at me blinking.

She finally walks to me slowly.

I pick her up putting her on my lap, she looks like her mother but she's a replica of me.

Me: Tsholofelo.

Tsholofelo: Papa.

I get all emotional.
