Double Jeopardy
EPILOGUE
NARRATED
It's been a month since the arrests. Today is the day of sentencing. Detective did an amazing job with the case. He had his doubts but in the end it all paid out. After Emihle threw her father under the bus, she added her husband as one of her victims all in the name of freedom. She didn't want to go to prison and she was determined to do whatever it takes that will grant the freedom she needs. She confirmed everything that the police already had on Malusi and actually gave them more as well. "You played me." Emihle says to the prosecutor, Lindi. Who decided to have a talk with her before they go into court. "I didn't play you Emihle. You are going to get a reduced sentence. We never promised you freedom. Besides, how can you expect to be free after everything you have done. Emihle you created a an illegal drug, a drug that you were planning on selling with your brother and sister in law. You can't expect to not go to prison for that. You might have given us more than what we had. We didn't really need you to win this case, we already won the case when were received all the evidence we had. We just needed you mainly for your father because we didn't need have on him. And detective Mbhele thought it would be actually better if we had all of you confessing against each other and it worked."
She tells here the reality of things and that hits hard on Emihle. She believed that after everything she will be free. She will be free to live her life and keep the business alive. She didn't realize that it was a trap all along. "Look Emihle, you will probably get a shorter sentence than everyone else but when you get out, you have turn your life around. Your paharmacy will still be there since that was not seized by the state. Appoint someone who will take good care of it. It's legit business, it will be a good start for you. It is not tainted by your other activities. You kept it clean and that is good thing. You have to do better especially for the child you are carrying. Your husband will be in here longer than you, he might not get out. Your child can't lose both parents and your husband knows and understands that. Malusi is one step ahead of you Emihle, he has always been."
"What do you mean that?" She asks, surprised and doesn't understand why she would say something like that.
"Malusi has been planning your exit strategy for a while now," Lindi continued, her tone steady and firm. "You might be the one in front of the judge today, but he has already secured alliances that could mitigate your risks. He knows how to work the system, and with the information he's gathered, he might even look for an appeal for you." A wave of panic swept over Emihle, her thoughts racing. She couldn't believe what Lindi was saying. She couldn't believe what Malusi did for her, but when she thinks about it, it's not for her, it's for the child that she is carrying. "If he manages to manipulate the narrative, you might come out of this unscathed while he bears the brunt of the guilt."
Emihle clenched her fists, feeling the weight of it all around her. "What should I do?" she implored, an edge of desperation in her voice. "I raise this child alone."
You will not be raising the child alone. Your mother will be there. All you have to do is take the opportunity that he has created for you. It's about survival, and you are carrying the future with you, a future that you will have to teach to do better that the two of you did." Lindi replied, her voice softening for the first time. "When the time comes, make sure the court understands the full story; it's your chance to shift the perspective from perpetrator to survivor."
Outside the courtroom, the atmosphere crackled with tension. Emihle caught sight of her father being led in, his expression unreadable. Would he show any sign of remorse, of understanding the damage he had caused? She pulled in a shuddering breath, her conviction hardening. No longer would she hide behind family ties; today she would claim her voice.

Malusi made the ultimate sacrifice. When he found out that Emihle was pregnant with his child, he swore that Emihle will be out as soon as possible. He doesn't his child raised by anyone else. If he can't do, then his mother must do it. At least that way will know about him. Emihle might be a lot of things, she might have betrayed him which he knew would happen but he knows that she will always make sure that their child knows about him and visits him.
As Emihle stood in the courtroom, the weight of her choices pressed down on her. She thought about the sacrifices Malusi was willing to make and the lengths he had gone to protect their child. "What if he fails?" she whispered to herself, anxiety creeping in. But deep down, she knew she had to believe in his plan. Every moment spent in fear and regret would not serve as a foundation for her future.
The doors to the courtroom swung open, and Lindi gestured for Emihle who was standing next to her to take a seat. "Remember, this is not a game anymore Emihle. When you guys started this, it might have started as a game but not anymore. You have a child to worry about now. You are a mother to be, and that is your greatest strength," Lindi encouraged as she took her place beside her. "Use your story, your truth. Don't let your father distort it. This is your moment."
The judge entered, and Emihle felt the intensity of the room. As she faced the panel, her heart raced. "I'm here not just for judgment, but for redemption," she spoke, her voice steady, finding a new determination within. She recounted her journey, her mistakes, but also the hope that a child could bring. "I want to show my child there is a path beyond our past—a path that embraces honesty and integrity."
Her words hung in the air, rippling with emotion. The silence around her was punctuated only by her beating heart. Then her father's gaze locked onto hers. There was a moment, just a split second, where a flicker of realization crossed his face. Could he finally understand?
Malusi, though physically absent, felt present in her resolve. "When you're in here, each one of you, remember what you are fighting for," she continued, eyes unwavering. "I choose to break this cycle, and I accept the consequences of my actions. I will not let my child suffer for my choices."
As the gavel fell, marking the end of her statement, Emihle felt a surge of hope. No matter the outcome, she was reclaiming her narrative. She may have fallen victim to circumstances, but she would rise to forge a new reality—not just for herself, but for a future built on resilience, understanding, and love. Because of Malusi's words, she was sentenced to five years in prison, eligible for parole in three years. At least her child will still be young enough for her to bond with.

Milani was also sentenced to life in prison. Through out the court case she has not shown an remorse for what she did especially the kidnapping of Lwandle. She was so adamant that she did nothing wrong. She felt entitled to everything. She thought of every excuse for her crime but the judge was having none of it. Milani wanted to fight everything. She wanted to fight to be free but her husband made sure that she never sees the light of day when he was called to the stand as a witness. He burried Milani for far deep, she could never get out. It's hard for her to accept that the game is over. It's hard for her to accept that she is no longer in control. It's hard for her to accept that she lost control a long time ago. Milani didn't even shed a tear when Lwandle gave testimony of what he experience when his mother kidnapped him. The judge was disappointed and for the lack of remorse her punishment was life in prison. Just like Emihle's father.
This was a long case for Detective Mbhele but in the end, he won. With the help of Detective Nxele and his team, he managed to bring down the biggest drug lords and human traffickers. This is the biggest of his career as well as Lindi. Now that it is all over, it time for them to breathe and enjoy life a little while taking a breaking from the law. They seem to have found themselves entangled after working together for a while and now they are exploring exactly what is happening with them.
For some life has proven not to be what you want or planned. It has proven that one can never have full control of their life. There will always be something that will bring out of your comfort zone. This is the hard lesson that our beloved Milani has to learn and she is learning it the hard way. Eventually prison will humble her. Will it humble her though or will she want to take control of it and make it her own. But now she knows that she can never under estimate anyone. Nqaba taught her that. The day he walked out on her and said "CHECHMATE" she knew it was all over but she is not one to give up. She will strive to survive and come out on top even if it's in prison.
