​My Dear Melancholy (Part 1) follows Naledii, a successful young writer, and her girlfriend of eight years, Lee, a driven lawyer, as they embark on a seven-month journey from South Africa to New York City. While they initially enjoy a lavish new life, tension mounts as Lee’s possessive and violent protectiveness emerges, notably during a brutal nightclub altercation and a subsequent sexual encounter. The relationship is tested further by external forces, including Maeve, a seductive new acquaintance, and Isaac, a mystery figure with an eye for Naledii. A sudden breakup engineered by Lee throws Naledii into despair, revealing deep insecurities about Zandile, an ex-girlfriend who has reentered Lee's life. However, Lee eventually confesses she broke up to shield Naledii from the danger of her secret business dealings. Just as they reconcile and celebrate their traditional Lobola marriage, Naledii is kidnapped, forcing Lee into a violent and lethal rescue mission that exposes her ruthless secret life. The story concludes with a final twist: while attempting to legally register their marriage, Naledii discovers a fraudulent record claiming she is already married to Isaac Caleb Newton—the man she briefly met in New York—leaving their future in limbo.
