Chapter 4

It's been a few days since I saw him. There was no call, no nothing after that date. It felt like it was really a good bye.

Shakes had invited to a party the other day and we were preparing for that. My dorm room was a hurricane of discarded clothes and the sharp, floral scent of hairspray. Sibongile was leaning into the mirror, drawing a wing of eyeliner , while I sat on the edge of my bed, clutching a pair of hoop earrings.
"He then kissed my forehead, Sibo," I whispered, the memory sending a fresh jolt of electricity through my stomach. "In the middle of the street, Sips, after he told me about his parents."

"He told you about his parents?"

"Yeah, I also shared about mine. We just had this connection friend. Like ...like he was actually seeing me."

"Crazy, I don't even know about nothing about him. Never thought of his parents other than Shakes family. Man is literally part of their family.

"Yeah...and hes amazing, Sibo. I think... I think this is it."
Sibongile turned around, her expression devoid of the hype I was looking for. She just looked at me with a pity.
"Omphile, listen to me," she said, her voice dropping that playful tone she usually used. "You need to be so, so careful. I'm serious."
The smile slid off my face. A knot of coldness formed in my chest. "Why can't you just be happy for me? For once, I'm not just the nerd. For once, someone like Zuko looks at me and sees a woman."
"It's not that I don't want you happy," she sighed, sitting down next to me and taking my hand. "But look at you. You have a soft heart, Ompie. You cry when you see you watch a movie. You've got a future that's built on straight lines and logic. Zuko? He's chaos. You aren't built for the kind of heartbreak a guy like that carries in his pockets. He'll break you into pieces you won't be able to glue back together."
"And what about you?" I snapped, pulling my hand away. "You're with Shakes. He's a spinner too. He's in that same world. Why are you exempt from the 'heartbreak' but I'm too fragile for it?"
Sibongile looked at me. "Because I know how these boys work, Ompie. I know when to laugh and when to walk away. I don't give them the parts of me that can actually break. You? You're already planning the wedding in your head. I know you. That's the difference."
I turned away, blinking back hot, angry tears. "I'm going to the party. And I'm going to have a good time, well at least try."
